Haven’t we all been exposed to Literature, some more than others. Right now, you’re reading a part of literature, it might not be the best example, but it still is literature. The only difference between me and an expert is that only the skillful can really decipher what it really means. I’ve read my fair share of literature, not too much, but not that less. But what’s really important is not the amount of books you read, but how you read them, and do you understand the book.
Recently I was made to read an in depth analysis of the book “The wizard of Oz” for an American History Class Assignment. Even though I didn’t have even half a mind of reading it, I did. And ironically, it was fun. I mean we’ve all seen the movie “The wizard of Oz” with the girls red shoes which she would tap and magical things would happen. If you haven’t watched that, you’ve been deprived of your childhood.
To any normal person like me, it seemed like one of those fairy tail movies with a evil witch and a protagonist. But that analysis opened new doors for me. The analysis showed that the story was just based on the current events of the time period. It was actually based on the silver coinage issue going on in the American History. While Dorothy represented the common man, each one of the characters represented someone important. Another interesting fact revealed in the analysis was the fact that Dorothy’s shoes were actually silver colored instead of Red. In the movie, they changed it to Red for some reason. It’s just amazing that when you research the reason behind why someone wrote it, or what they wrote about, you get so much more than just entertainment. You get knowledge, and knowledge is the ultimate power.
Another clear reference I can give you is Shakespeare. You pick up any play of Shakespeare and you’ll understand what I’m talking about. Why do people love the works of Shakespeare? Because no matter who you are, you can apply his philosophies to your own life. The works of Shakespeare are just amazing, and I love reading them. I admit, I have slacked off while reading Macbeth, but I regret it. Fortunately, I still have the opportunity to read it. One of the most famous quotes from Shakespeare is:
She should have died hereafter.
There would have been a time for such a word.
Tomorrow, and tomorrow, and tomorrow
Creeps in this petty pace from day to day
To the last syllable of recorded time.
And all our yesterdays have lighted fools
The way to dusty death. Out, out, brief candle.
Life’s but a walking shadow, a poor player
That struts and frets his hour upon the stage,
And then is heard no more. It is a tale
Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury,
Signifying nothing.
Just read this quote, isn’t it like a perfect work of Literature. I love how Shakespeare just puts the meaning of life in these few sentences. I guess the only way you can really understand it is by reading the book, but what strikes me the most is that even without reading the book, everyone can connect with the lines in bold. This is just an example of one of the many extraordinary works of literature, that just make you think, they make you do more than think, they make you PONDER!
Maybe you’ve never realized it, but the bedtime stories your parents told you, they all have a meaning to them. They just don’t make you feel happy, but they all have a hidden life lesson inside them. I can’t seem to remember where I read an article, but I have read one on this topic. These things do make you think, and think we should. So when you pick that book up, don’t just read it for reading it, READ it because you want to know. You want to know the purpose behind it, the reasoning, the history, the story. Everything behind it, every meaning of it. You want the knowledge of the book not just its content!

That’s definitely true. True genius in literature lies in a certain depth of words, sometimes hidden behind the surface beauty of the words themselves.
Another aspect of good literature that I love is that the same passage can mean different things to different people.
