Quote of the Day

There are moments when one has to choose between living one's own life, fully, entirely, completely - or dragging out some false, shallow, degrading existence that the world in it's hypocrisy demands.

Just a few thoughts

What would you think if you saw a African American’s car have a bumper sticker saying “black power”? You think that this is a proud African American.

Now what do you think if you saw a White person’s car have a bumper sticker saying “white power”? You thought write, some racist KKK member.

Why so?

*********************************************

Have you ever looked at a rich young girl or boy? They look so cute. Have you ever thought that in a few years they might be cocky and stubborn like Paris Hilton? Is that being a sadist? Is that being a realist? Or is just because you’re a realist that you’re a sadist?

*********************************************

Have you ever felt like you’ve wasted a lot of money when you give a poor starving man a dollar while minutes later you buy a $3.75 cup of coffee from starbucks which you throw away instead of refrigerating when it gets warm?

1. Good question. Since it’s 12.51am, I will ponder over this later, and answer later as well.

2. A cute little rich guy or girl? For me, wealth has never influenced cuteness.

3. I generally don’t give much to beggars, and I don’t remember the last time I bought myself coffee from anywhere.

It’s not the richness that influences the cuteness. What I’m trying to say is that they look so cute and innocent when younger, but when they grow older they’ll be snobby kids.

Those are definitely provocative thoughts!

All kids are cute, in that case. I don’t stop to think about how they will be when they grow up. The same can be applied to any kid. An ordinary kid with an abusive father could grow into a psychopath, for example. Maybe I’m digressing… the simple answer to the second question is probably “no”

As for the first question… “black power” is as stupid as “white power” for me. All these kind of stupid slogans seeking to glorify one particular community/group of people, to me generally signify a lack of integrating force among people.

Maybe instead of Power I should say “pride”. What would be you’re first thought.

Pride is a milder form of the same thing.
I’d love for something to be along the lines of “From cycle to car” or something that signifies achievement on the individual level.

Lets say you give this “bum” whatever amount of money you did. And a few moments later you see him walking in to the store you are in buying yourself a drink or maybe a little snack. And hes in there using the money you have given him to buy alcohol, cigarettes or something else that will be doing him no good. I myself don’t feel the need to give them my hard earned money when they will just waste it on something meaningless im not saying all of them are like this just that us giving them a giveaway well do them no good. Instead of out begging they should be looking for work trying to get themselves back up we are not helping if we give them money i think we are just adding to the problem.

When i look at a young boy or girl who are wealthy i dont look at how cute they are or anything of that sort. You look at their character if anything you can see more or less what a person will become just by looking at them. And if i am looking at a child who is wealthy i first look at their parents because those parents will be the biggest influence to them whether they no it or not. You are more like your parents or i should say family then you know. They may shape how you become either by you becoming more like them or straying from their path and doing something on your own.

Not all beggars are druggies. Some are really poor. I really don’t think a lot of people give jobs to people who are like that.

I give them money when I can see the sadness in their eyes. I’ll give them some money and let them decide their future. Atleast give them a chance. I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt.

As for the kids, I was talking about seeing a kid on the streets. My first judgment is that they’re going to grow up and be snobby kids. But then that’s just me.

I know not all of them are druggies but i think if they want to do something with their lives its their choice go do something. Out begging gets you know where your out begging for days and you can get maybe 5,6 maybe even 7 dollars is that really going to help you? How long will you survive off of this.

As for kids, actually i should say for just about anyone i dont judge on their appearances or what they wear. Its like they say “dont judge a book by its cover”. That person could grow up to be someone who gives charity and uses their wealth for good reason while they could end up being snobby as you say. I just want to say dont judge people until you get to know them cause they could surprise you.

Funny, I think about the same things sometimes. Issues related to black/white prejudice can be applied to so many other areas like feminism/masculism, etc. For your example, I think people may react the ways you mentioned simply because of the history or even stereotypes that go along with some of those sayings/slogans. There is nothing wrong having a self-righteous attitude but I think the problem arises when we only apply that attitude to ourselves or those similar to ourselves, as in the same race or gender, etc. I can’t really think of an example to back that up but I think our problem is that we center our attitudes too much on ourselves and those like us to the point where, to a certain extent, we isolate those outside of our comfort zone and that is where our prejudice may stem from.

As for the second point, I agree completely with Shabaz. We can look at a child and make assumptions but we really don’t know anything about him/her just from knowing appearance and that they have wealth. The biggest influence on the child would be the parents and if they have a certain air about them you may be able to make the assumption that the child will turn out the same way. But, even then, we all live our own lives. Much of our life is structured around the way our parents brought us up and taught us to think but we can think for ourselves and make our own decisions. Most people know if they are spoiled or if they have that kind of ‘Paris Hilton’ attitude. What really tells you about their character is if they are willing to change that attitude.

And finally, the third point. I try to be a good person and help people out. I was walking on campus last year in the rain and a woman walked up to me in tattered clothes. She begged me for any money because she said she was living under a bridge with her kids and needed to get food. Now, I don’t know if she was lying or not and honestly that wouldn’t matter to me. Whatever this person wants to do with my money is their own problem. It is my choice to give them money, not to spend it for them. Not all homeless people are going nowhere with their lives; they haven’t all given up on life. So I feel like if I do give money to a beggar, that this might be one of those who still has a chance to get back on their feet and I am helping. I wouldn’t say that giving money to a beggar is a waste at all.

well, if we see a white person’s car with WHITE POWER then yeah we’ll think they’re KKK but if we see a black person’s car with BLACK POWER then the car will definetly get bumps and scratches. its life and that’s a downside to be in a free country, we can’t express our ethnic pride in public :\

danlo,
I agree with paragraph 1, and a lot of times this isolation happens without the person doing it becoming aware of it.

I have nothing to add to point 2 or 3 though.

I totally agree with all that you said. My ap biology teacher told me today his resolution to all this. He says that we need aliens to come and attack our planet, this would unite us all because no matter how i look or what religion i practice we live on this earth together and we will protect it together. Because we are fellow humans, brothers as he said. This actually struck something in me because i believed every word of it. I think if this happened it could change our state of mind.

As for the giving money to beggars I am a pretty religious person i will leave which religion out of it and get straight to my point. I give quite a good amount of charity whenever i can to somewhere trustworthy by this i mean somewhere i know the money will get there and it will be used for a good. I know this will contradict the points i made in my last point but i give money to any beggar i see i dont have the heart not to i see them and i feel their pain i imagine myself in such a situation and i give as much as i can. I believe god gave me the money to do something with it. I believe the only way i can get more money is to be thankful for what i have i help those he need the help just because i think if i can help why not just give it a shot people can always suprise you.
