Convenience over logic? I don’t think so. Convenience is logic. Imagine a big-ish office with many floors. Having one stapler per office is stupid, to put it mildly. Having one stapler per floor also is not enough, as people would spend more time hunting for it than on their work.
Secondly, if you really look at it, you don’t even need milk. Stop drinking milk. All your body needs is food and water to survive. You don’t even need to process or cook food. You can eat raw fruits and vegetables. Human bodies are designed to eat and digest that.
I think we need to draw a line here. Maybe an MP3 player is an accessory to some people, but for me, it enhances my life infinitely. I cannot tell you how drab my day can get unless I listen to music on my way to college. It’s depressing. If it hadn’t been for that computer in your room, you would not have known me, I would not have known you, and we wouldn’t have been able to share perspectives or ideas. If it hadn’t been for chocolate, I wouldn’t have drank milk when I was a kid, as a result of which, I would probably not have received enough calcium/whatever.
It’s a form of extremity to say that we should only try to get what we need rather than what we want. Instead focus on saying that we should NOT get what we will not use. A lot of people buy things for showing off rather than for their own personal utility. THIS should be avoided. Buy something if you feel you are doing justice to it.
To put it simply, I disagree with the majority portion of this post
PS: It may also be worth considering… that if someone has worked hard to earn money, he has the right to spend it on luxuries and accessories that will enhance his existence. To tell him that even though he has earned hard to earn that money, he should only spend it on things he needs is to take away his right to live freely, and to improve his living conditions.

The stapler thing, I think I forgot a key part in that. Each office had atleast 2 if not more. Do you need 2 staplers? These offices weren’t that big, it’ll take a minute to find it.
Convenience isn’t always logic (though at times it is).
I know that without the mp3 our lives would be a drag. Hell, I say it all the time. I can’t live without my music. But there are so many things to see, to look, to hear. My friend and I were talking about this and he said that when we listen to music on the streets we miss so many things going around us. It’s like it takes you out of consciousness.
I do agree that many a times just necessities aren’t enough. Life would be too bland. But what today’s society portrays is that it’s ok to waste and to have excess of materials. That’s what I’m against. We need to strike a balance because as time goes on, with technology ever increasing, the luxury keeps on increasing while allocating the same funds for more useful purposes keeps on decreasing.

You’re right. But efficiency always is. And a lot of times, what’s convenient is also what’s efficient.
My friend and I were talking about this and he said that when we listen to music on the streets we miss so many things going around us.
And how many of those things are important?
((((entire last paragraph)))
I agree, and it is the essence of my last comment.

Quite a few, you have to keep you’re eyes and ears open while crossing the road. The ears are pretty much closed if we listen to our Ipod. We’re really not paying attention to anything else either because we’re so into our music

I think what king is trying to say here is that we have become more materialistic than needed. Go ahead spend your money because you worked hard to earn it buy your ipods but dont waste that money on stupid idiotic things. And dont act like an idiot when you have that money wasting it and then possibly doing things that make it harder for those who arent as fortunate as you. By this i mean dont do stupid things concentrate on driving cause maybe you can afford to get in a crash and just buy a whole new car some people cant even keep their payments on the one they have. I think it was a saturn commercial where it says rethink excessive, i bring this up because it shows how idiotic people can be wasting their money on dressing up their dogs gold toilet seats(things i remember from the video). I agree with the things he said in his post not so much with the manner in which he said it.

I agree that we have become materialistic but if you actually want to dive into this philosophical topic then you need to agree that you cannot keep living in stone age or that dream world where you have everything in the manner you want.
for example just 15 staplers for 15 people!!
if you need to live in todays world then you need to live the way it teaches you and stop being philosophical like my literature teacher used to be ![]()

We shouldn’t have to live the way society teaches us, because we make society and we have the power to change it also, not the other way around. If everyone were to change, then it’d be a better world.
Ofcourse, I do understand that it is unrealistic, but we have to atleast try.

technology is the future so we have to live with it. And we have to love it too!
I love it. My first love is computers girls second and I guess it would be rare chance if a girl changes me!
try try try till you succeed and I am sure this is a never ending debate.

first of all, brilliant title! The King is officially a princess now.
i do agree that today a lot of people are spending a lot of money on superfluous things. in india 10% of the people have around 80% of the total wealth of the country. in a lot of countries this ratio is even more alarming. we are living in a world where there is so much economic disparity that a lot of people will undoubtedly feel guilty about spending money on stuff like an extra car or for that matter iPods. Dr. Manmohan Singh addressed the CEOs of all the different enterprises of india and enlightened them on the ‘moral duty’ they have towards improving the condition of the people. needless to say, a lot of people applauded whatever he said, and there were far more who ridiculed him saying that they’ve earned the money with their own hard work and they have a right to spend it as they wish. the law can’t question them as it’s their own money they are wasting, or ‘using’, as they prefer to call it.
in my opinion, we are presently in the age of technology. i completely agree with Gurdit. it’s efficiency we are looking for today. even if we spend a couple of dollars more (or for that matter a few hundred or thousand dollars more), and are able to do whatever work we are doing faster and more efficiently, i’d say we should go for it. it’s time everyone started planning long term instead of trying to achieve short term goals. a very important part of efficiency as well as good economics is the money u are spending. there should be no expenditure that is not needed. though we seldom stick to this, i believe we should try our level best to do it.
i sometimes wonder if we really require seven staplers at our place (it’s just me and my parents: 3 ppl). or for that matter 2 cars. do i really need my iPod? i sure am addicted to it and spend hours listening to it while studying. how did i study before i got an iPod? i did, but it seems really difficult today. okay i need a computer, i’m not going to get into that, but do i really need this particular internet connection which costs me over Rs. 2000 monthly? there are people who are working absolutely fine on a rs. 300-400 connection.
i’m saying a lot here. i sure hope to cut down my regular (read: superfluous) expenses and give money to someone who really needs it. i know that’s not going to happen. whatever i might say here or whatever seems so ‘right’ at present is no longer going to feel so ‘right’ when i am in such a situation. in short i don’t practise what i preach and i’m pretty sure a lot of people don’t. and yes, I’m NOT giving away my Ipod or this internet connection for anything in the world!

You can go days, months, years saying your going to do something it doesnt really matter until you do it. I may not be giving all my money to charities but i dont have a ipod in my ears cause i think its kind of useless to carry an ipod around with 40 gigs or something of space its pretty much a computer. You really arent going to listen to all that music. I have a 1 gig mp3 i was going to buy a 4 gig but i thought it would be to much so i gave that money away that day(when i went to mosque). So i think i made the right choice i want a 2 gig just to add a little more but this 1 gig is doing it for me i use it for studying, when im running, tennis practice, or in the gym and it does me good. I may not be changing the world but im not just sitting back and talking about what you could do to change something. Just go and do it, even if its the smallest thing at least it is something.

You speak the truth on the last few sentences. No matter what we say here doesn’t make a difference, it’s what we actually do in the world.
We should try to help, even if it’s a small deed it is a good deed.
