Quote of the Day

There are moments when one has to choose between living one's own life, fully, entirely, completely - or dragging out some false, shallow, degrading existence that the world in it's hypocrisy demands.

Everything Was Exactly How It Seemed

This sentence is from ‘Postal Service’s’ Song “Sleeping In”. The band talks about how he had a dream where everything was exactly how it seemed, nothing to cover up the truth. I wanted to write this post for quite some time now, but only today’s events gave me enough motivation to actually write it. What if everything was exactly how it seemed?

Today’s society is masked with lies and deceit. Every single one of us has lied once in their lifetime. I’m not saying that’s necessarily a bad thing, but just saying we all have. And those lies cover up other lies and in the end, our society is based upon lie after lie, like a diamond is made of lattice of carbon. I think our society would just crumble under the initial blow when all lies are revealed.

I wonder what society would be like if everyone just told the truth? Would it be a better place because lies won’t be in front of our eyes? Would we choose leaders who truly want to help people? Will it be easier to criminalize people, after all we’ll know whose intentions were what? Would there be no fights because we’ll know that in the end, everyone’s just insecure? Wouldn’t the world understand each other better? My parents would understand me, I would understand them. My friend would understand me, I would understand them. It’ll be like we would reach this new level of communication, this awesome stage where everything is so clear than no one is confused, no one knows which emotion to feel. It’ll be this absolute height where everything’s clear. A state of all knowing-ness where your mind doesn’t wonder if you’re right or wrong. Because all you know is right, no lies.

Or will it just go downhill? Society will fall, and burn into ashes. Will all the truth just be too much to bear? Will everything I want to say to my parents or my friends just crush their hearts and make everyone bitter? Will the fact that everyone tell the truth not change anything? Will people still not understand each other, or just deny it outright? Will we find out that Mother Teresa, noble peace price winner, actually was the most selfish person on earth? Hitler, who was a devil in disguise, had the noblest intentions for the human race? Will the truth just overwhelm us and knowing all the cruel intentions of the world just separate us from each other and we’ll all just live in our little corner? What will happen to humanity? Will we all turn sadist because we realize that in fact no one truly cares about you and that everyone’s just selfish?

All these things boggle my mind, but in the end at times I do wish that the truth was revealed, because I’m just too much of a coward to say all I want to. In the end, aren’t we all? And those who actually do say all that they want, society puts a branding on them – they call them asses, or people who are rude and have no manners.

P.S. on a lighter note, guys would start getting way less because girls would know that we’re after 1 thing mostly.

For starters, let us not confuse intention with truth. Hitler has truly told us that he wanted to “cleanse” the world of “evil” Jews (to state it very crudely). That was a noble intention for him, but the truth it that the holocaust was one of the most tragic events in human history.

Moving on…
“YOU WANT THE TRUTH?? YOU CAN’T HANDLE THE TRUTH!!”
I don’t know which movie this is from, but it’s true. We can’t handle the truth.
“Do I look fat?” literally means “I know I look fat, but please tell me I don’t, so that I can begin to hope that I don’t look as fat as I fear I do… I mean, as long as you think I don’t look fat, there’s hope that others might think like you too”

Alternately, had we, as a society, been accustomed to the truth since time immemorial, then there is a possibility that we would be able to tolerate the truth. We wouldn’t be shocked and stunned when we found out that our children hate us, and our parents only want us to pay their bills. Or we wouldn’t be shocked if a widow mother wanted to do her son… a lot of perfectly naturally TRUE things are considered socially rejectable, immoral or unnatural. The truth shall set you free, eventually… when it’s time to die, and there’s no longer any reason to hide. Till that day comes, we shall continue to hide in our sugar coated, perfectly simulated happy happy world.

“I wonder what society would be like if everyone just told the truth?”

I think the question is wrong. Because it is something like, “What if energy wasn’t conserved?”, “What if mass could be created?”. What I mean to say, truth cannot exist alone. It is a simple law of nature/science or whatever you call it, that for any observer, if any thing is to exist, it’s absence has to exist.

For example, if matter has to exist, it’s absence i.e. vacuum has to exist too. Inversely, if vacuum is to exist, the absence of vacuum i.e. matter has to exist. Just like if light is to exist, dark has to exist too. Because if there is any thing that exists solely without it’s absence existing, it has to be omnipresent and has a uniform distributional density. And for any observer, any omnipresent object cannot be detected because all observations are based on disturbances caused in existence and/or distributional density.

Similarly, truth cannot exist without the existence of it’s absence. Now, the absence of truth may not necessarily mean a lie, but it may mean either a lie or ‘no-statement’. Which means, if a given person chooses to reply, a ‘lie’ will always be an option for him.

If, truth was an omnipresent entity, then, humans couldn’t have ever detected something like the “truth”, because at the lowest level of abstraction, you cannot define or distinguish any characteristic of any object solely by the properties of it’s objects. So, basically, everybody would have spoken the truth from the first day, and your actions would have been modified, because then, there would have been no choice for a person to hide his doings. At any costs, it was sure that whatever he does will come out.

At the same time, we would have realized that our perverted nature, criminal instincts are natural, because everybody would have to disclose it. Ans therefore, knowing our nature from the very beginning, we would never have faced a “shock” or an inability to handle any occuring. But now we do, because we have a concept of “knowing the truth”.
